Porsche 550 Spyder Top 100 Sexiest Car - Rank 78

The Porsche 550 was a sports car automobile produced by Porsche during the 1950s.Inspired by a small Porsche 356 Spyder which was created and raced by Walter Glöckler in 1951, the factory decided to build such a car, being its first designed specifically for use in auto racing.
The 550’s racing success has been a major, if not the major, contributing factor to Porsche’s commercial success. The 90 car run had swept the global competition in its class with a mere 100 horsepower. From the LeMans in 1953 to 1955, the Porsche Spyder was a force to be felt on the track.
Porsche built four 550 Spyders for the 1954 Le Mans 24 Hours, numbered 10 through 13. This car, S/N 550-10, was assigned to Richard von Frankenberg and Helm Glockler. In practice, it was the fastest of the 1,500-cc 550s, but it was also the first to retire. Only 20 minutes into the race, a holed piston forced its withdrawal.
