The original Exige (NA or naturally aspirated Exige) was launched in 2000 and had a 1.8 L Rover K Series engine. It produced 170 bhp in standard form and 190 bhp (142 kW) in the VHPD version. Compared to the Elise, it had wider wheel arches, a front splitter, a large rear spoiler and a fiberglass roof.

Max torque now measures 165 lb-ft at a lower 5,500 rpm, with 80 percent of the twist available at just over 2,000 rpm, and once the torque peak is reached, it plateaus in an almost flat line to 7,000 rpm. Max engine rpm is nominally 8,000 rpm, but 1.5-second bursts to 8,500 are granted by the engine electronics if the driver deems it necessary.

The Lotus Exige is a very strange car. Almost no other four-wheeled anything produces such polar-opposite responses from our staff as does the Exige, which is essentially a more-track-ready version of the already extreme Elise that Lotus brought to market last year.

The second Lotus Elan (often known as the M100 Elan), released in 1989, was a technical tour de force and defined Lotus’s “performance through light weight” tradition. Its styling by Peter Stevens, who was also responsible for the redesign of the Lotus Esprit, was also controversial. The Elan was intended to please drivers moving up from a “hot hatch”. It was instantly derided by the motoring press for lacking the tail-out handling of traditional sports cars. Sadly, it was the right car at the wrong time. Every Elan built lost Lotus, owned by GM at the time, money.

The lotus Elan+2s/130 was produced between 1967 and 1974, it gave way to the Lotus Esprit. Right from the start everything about it was right, a beautiful fibreglass body bolted to a separate chassis.
